I built a small rock crawling course in my backyard. It’s better suited for my smaller scale crawlers but It’s fun with the larger scale ones too.
My HB Toys ZP1001 RC Rock Crawler arrived from Banggood with two broken shocks and a stripped out servo. Banggood refunded me a large portion of the cost which is more than enough to cover all the upgrades I planned on doing to this beast.
For the time being, I used Loctite super glue to temporarily fix the servo. I ordered new oil shocks from Amazon which are drastically better than the stock shocks.

I swapped the stock tires out with smaller tires off of an RGT Adventurer because I’m in the process of building an AMT 1/20 Scale Toyota model body for it and want it to look more scale. I wanted to test out the tires on my backyard course and can’t believe how much better this thing climbs with them. I did lose a little ground clearance, though.

More and more people are choosing to rent rather than own, downsize and/or take part in tiny house living. As the popular cultural-wide trend “Less is more” continues to rise in both the young and old, it only makes sense that the need for scaled-down appliances and gadgets is on the rise. You might be wondering how any of this relates to RC cars/trucks.
Brought to you from the masterminds behind the awesome and ultra affordable diy Orlandoo Micro Crawler Kit Series and the original DAS87 nano Land Rover. DasMikro has added several new models to their DAS87 Series. This unboxing doesn’t do this kit justice. Aside from the body and tires, pretty much the entire kit is made of metal. Once built, It’s smaller than Bic lighter!
The micro and nano rc market is growing rapidly. While big RC’s(1:12, 1:10, etc) are a blast to drive, they typically require a large outdoor area to be enjoyable and if you’re like me, warm weather too. Unfortunately for me, I live in an area that has harsh winters. Winter here can last upwards of six months, sometimes more. I spend a lot of time indoor during those frigid, snowy months. Micro and nano crawlers allow you to crawl anywhere, anytime, any season, indoors or outdoors. It takes no time and very little space to create a mini crawling course in your home or apartment. In fact, the DAS87 and Orlandoo’s are so small that a desk can instantly be transformed into a crawling course. This winter, I plan on creating a couple of diorama/terrarium crawling courses. One of them will be portable while the other will be a more fixed set up in my basement.

If you were a child of the 90’s then you likely remember when toy grade RC cars moved at a snail’s pace, chewed through AA batteries in a matter of minutes or even worse; came with a tethered remote. I am sure we probably shared that same underwhelmed feeling.

Like the title implies, this thing is a crawler so don’t expect it to set any speed records. The crawler is geared low to increase torque, therefore, improving its ability to climb. And boy can’t this thing climb. With a max climb angle of 50°, I can’t emphasize enough how impressive this toy grade crawler is. This is by far, one of the best inexpensive purchases I’ve ever made.

As for the runtime, that heavily depends on the surface you’re driving over. The crawler is perfectly capable of powering through the grass, but continuing to do so will deplete the battery much faster than just crawling over rocks. I average 20 minutes on a single charge when driving on dirt and rocks. I’ve managed to get up to 25 minutes when strictly rock crawling. 20 minutes of runtime is excellent for any toy grade RC, however, this crawler is so much fun that I couldn’t help but feel disappointed whenever the battery ran out. Part of that disappointment stemmed from the fact that the battery takes roughly 5 hours to recharge. I would recommend buying some spare batteries at the very least. Some owners have managed to get an hour of runtime after completing a battery mod upgrade. I’m thinking of doing this mod as well and will update accordingly.

Apart from a ridiculously long recharge time, one complaint I’ve come across online is the location of the power switch. The switch is located on the underside of the crawler and susceptible to getting bumped. I’ve put many hours on this crawler and this has only happened once. The switch scrapped on a rock and powered off the crawler.

Instructions:
Remove the battery from the RC and set it aside. On the RC, cut off the battery connector. Leave as much of the power wires attached to the RC crawler as possible. Solder the battery holder to the crawlers power wires. Ensure to match positive to positive, negative to negative. Next super glue the battery holder into the battery compartment. Lastly, insert 4 freshly charged AA’s and put the cover back on. That’s it. You’ll now get an hour or more of run time.
